Where the weather is still warm and the plunks are still flying

There have been 23 plunks in the Major League postseason so far this year, which isn't bad - it's actually the most plunks in the pre-world series rounds since 2005. But it's hard to keep interested in major league postseason plunkings when it seems like they're taking a week off between each game. But, there are alternatives. New seasons have already begun in the Arizona Fall League, the Venezuelan Winter League (Liga Venezuela Beisbol Profesional), the Mexican Pacific League (Liga Mexicana del Pacifico), and the Dominican Winter League (Liga de Beisbol Dominicano). The Puerto Rican league starts up next month. 84 batters have already been plunked in the Venezuelan League, 59 in the Mexican League, 37 in the Arizona Fall League and 11 in the Dominican League.

So, here are some leaders in winter league plunkings. Some of these players may be the Major League HBP heros of the future for your favorite team. Annoyingly, the MLB.com stat pages for these leagues don't list HBPs- but that's why we have the internet.

Daryl Jones is tearing up the Arizona Fall league so far, having been hit by 4 pitches in 10 games for the Surprise Rafters. He's a Cardinals minor leaguer, and he only got hit 6 times in AA level ball in 2009. But, in 2008 he's had 3 double digit plunk seasons in the minors, and a total of 50 minor league plunks. There are only three other batters who have been hit more than once in the Arizona Fall League, and the player's major league parent club is in parenthesis next to their names for the ones I bothered to look up.

The Dominican League is only a week and a half into there season, and Pablo Ozuna is the only player to be plunked twice so far. You may remember him from such teams as the Chicago White Sox from 2005 to mid-2008, but he spent 2009 hanging around the Phillies farm system, and is currently a free agent - perhaps hoping his Dominican league efforts at getting hit by pitches will land him an offer.

In the Mexican League, Heber Gomez is leading with 4 HBPs, with Roman Orantes chasing him at 3 HBPs. Neither of them is currently affiliated with a Major League club.

Lastly, we have the Venezuelan League - which so far has been the plunkiest league of all with a batter getting hit about once every 53.5 plate appearances. Adam Heether and Jon Jay have each been hit 5 times in Venezuala so far, and they play for the same team. No word yet on whether Hugo Chavez plans to cease those plunks for the government any time soon. Heether is a Brewers minor leaguer, and appears to have played at every level of their organization except the majors - and at every position. Jon Jay is a Cardinals minor leaguer who got hit 12 times for AAA Memphis in 2009. Also notable is Brendan Katin, with 3 plunks in just 31 plate appearances so far - he's been hit 40 times at various minor league levels for the Brewers system.

Pitchers and Catchers report - on what?

Pitchers and Catchers are beginning spring training, with the Red Sox and Indians starting camp yesterday, and the other 28 teams kicking things off between today and Sunday. This is a special time, when the pitching batteries get to do their sinister plotting before the regular position players (aka targets) have gotten to their spring training sites. You didn't think it was just because pitchers and catchers need more work in the spring did you? No - they like to plan, and work on secret things that they don't want the regular position players and hitters to know. In some cases they work on new and clever ways to hit batters without looking like they're trying to. In other cases they have extensive meetings to review studies of whether or not it's even possible to miss batters like Jason Kendall, Carlos Quentin and Chase Utley.

These are the subjects of many of the reports turned in by pitchers and catchers, but those are advanced topics. They all have to do a report, or so the headline leads me to believe when it says "pitchers and catchers report", and while the veterans and leading minds tackle the tough and top secret topics like who to hit with pitches and how hard to hit them, the rest of the pitchers and catchers are left to their own discretion what to do for their reports. Unfortunately, I fear most of the pitchers and catchers have probably paid too much attention to major sports news outlets and they all be reporting on nothing but Brett Favre (wanting to avoid the more sensitive topics closer to their own sport). But, just to help them out with their reports, maybe we can think of some better topics here.

So, if you're a pitcher or catcher and need help with your report, I give you full permission to use the following information about the final HBP totals in the various winter leagues. Maybe you can write it up as a study comparing the leagues, or maybe if you're one of these people listed you can write it as the classic "what I did on my winter vacation" report. Or, you can make a diorama. That's always fun too.

Caribbean Series Plunks:
(In case your not familiar with the Caribbean Series, every year the winning teams from the Venezuelan, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Domincan winter leagues get together and play a round robin tournament called the Caribbean Series. Each team plays each other team twice.)

Team Venezuala won the Caribbean series this year, but it was Mexico who took the title for getting hit by the most pitches, with 3 plunks in their 6 series games. Christian Quintero got hit twice for Mexico, by Giancarlo Alvarado of Puerto Rico, and Oneli Perez from the Dominican team. Mexico's 3rd HBP was recorded by Agustin Murillo against Edward Buzachero of Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rican team led the tournament in hitting batters, with 3 - two against the Mexican team, and one more against the Dominican Republic when Travis Minix hit Ronny Paulino. That was the only plunk taken on behalf of the Dominican team. Rounding out the Caribbean Series HBP list, Jose Cobos, representing Mexico, hit Luis Maza, of the Venezuelan team, and Andrew Lorraine, pitching for Venezuala, hit Jesus Feliciano of Team Puerto Rico.

Winter league update - pitchers

While many baseball fans have been busy enjoying freezing weather, snow, ice storms causing power failures, and other joys of winter, a lot of baseball players have been hanging around the various Caribbean leagues playing winter ball and getting hit by pitches. Which means it's time to take a look at who's been hitting the most batters in the winter leagues.

Arizona Fall League
The Arizona Fall League wrapped up their season in November, with Braves prospect Tommy Hanson winning the league MVP. But, Hanson only hit 3 of the 124 batters he faced in AFL play, which was good for only 8th place on the hit batters list. Sergio Perez was the biggest threat to batters safety in the league, hitting 6 batters, and only not hitting 100. He works for the Astros and could be plunking opposing batters for them in spring training soon.

Hawaii Winter League
The Hawaii Winter League also finished play in November, despite the name, and their leader in throwing baseballs at opposing hitters was Chris Salberg of the Orioles farm system. He hit 7 of the 136 batters he faced. But, right behind him was Steve Edlefson of the Giants system. He drilled 6 batters, but only needed 72 attempts, meaning he hit one out of every 12 batters.

Dominican Winter League
In the Dominican Winter League, there are some big names in the field of hitting batters. The 2008 MLB leader in plunks, Daniel Cabrera, is pitching there this winter, along with Reds pitchers Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto, who tied for 3rd in the majors. But, it's Julio Depaula who is showing them all how it's done - or how not to do it, with 7 hit batters out of 110 batters faced. It looks like the Rays were impressed enough to sign him.

Mexican Pacific League
In the Mexican League, major league veteran Oscar Villarreal has hit 6 batters in 252 attempts, but Rays farm hand Pablo Ortega and someone named Alfredo Caudillo have hit 7 each. Meanwhile, 41 year old former all-star Scott Erickson has hit 5 batters in 81 attempts, for a rate one plunk per 16.2 batters faced. Don't call it a comeback - he's been here for years. Game 4 of the Mexican League semi-finals is today.

Puerto Rican Winter League
The Puerto Rican Winter league has reached its postseason, and you can read all about it here if you can read spanish. I can't. But I can tell you that Josue Matos has led the league in hitting batters, so far, with 6, but Angel Garcia has only needed to face 112 batters to hit 5. Garcia is in the Royals farm system, and Matos has played in the farm systems for Seattle, Toronto and Philadelphia.

Venezuelan Winter League
In the Venezuelan League, Major League Free Agent Tony Armas Jr. is showcasing himself to potential employers by leading the league in hit batters. He's hit 6, tied for the league lead with Tracy Thorpe, who has been invited to Mariners training camp. Meanwhile, Felix Arellan only faced 32 batters, but at the rate he was going, he'd have hit 10.7 batters if he'd faced 100.

Winter League leaders in hitting batters

You're absolutely right. It is very strange that mlb.com has stats pages for the winter leagues, but doesn't include HBPs for batter or Hit Batters for pitchers, and it is completely unclear why they would leave out such an important stat. It's like they know I've got them covered or something.

Here are the Hit Batters leaders among pitchers in the various winter leagues:

Winter League HBP leaders

Just in case any of you thought writing a blog about Major Leaguers getting hit by pitches was too obscure, here's the leaders in the various Winter Leagues. If you're looking to travel to see some HBP action, it looks like the Dominican Winter League is the place to be - they're averaging 1.52 plunks per game. The Arizona Fall League is the next best choice, where they hit batters 1.2 times per game. Behind them are the Venezuelan and Hawaii Winter Leagues, averaging 1.02 and 1 plunk per game, and the Mexican Pacific League where batters have been plunked 0.93 times per game so far this year.

Anyway, here are the HBP leaders (batting) through 10/30/2008, by league:

If Kevin Frandsen's name sounds familiar, he's the guy who got hit by a pitch in his first three major league games, back in 2006. He's still with the Giants organization. Casper Wells is a prospect for the Detroit Tigers, and looks like he might be ready to add some valuable HBPs to their offense.
