More win percentages for position players

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

In response to the win percentages for position players I posted a couple of days ago, commenter Devon requested the career leaders for win percentage, regardless of team. So, below is the top 250 players since 1920, by how often their team won when they were in the starting lineup. The list is limited to players who made at least 500 starts, although maybe I should have picked a higher limit – because the leader comes out to be Whitey Kurowski. Just who you were expecting, I’m sure. If I had limited it to 1000 starts the leader would be Tommy Henrich, and if I put the limit at 2000 starts, we’d get Lou Gehrig, Pee Wee Reese, Babe Ruth, Derek Jeter and Mickey Mantle. Although Ruth’s would be a partial, because he played before 1920.
Also of note, I believe the active leaders as of then end of last year are Jorge Posada, Jason Varitek, Jeter and Carlos Ruiz. Posada retired, and Varitek is un-signed but hasn’t announced his retirement yet. So that leaves Jeter and Carlos Ruiz.

win percentages for position players

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Did you know that the Arizona Diamondbacks won 58% of their games when Tony Womack was in the starting lineup? And that no other Diamondback who started at least 500 games had better than a .535 win pct? Or that Carlos Ruiz is the only live ball era Philly who has started 500 games and won 60% of them? Or that Derek Jeter’s team has won also won 60% of the games he started, but that only ranks him 32nd in the live ball era history of the Yankees (since 1920)? Or that Fred McGriff’s .632 win pct with the Braves is the best for that team in the live ball era, but his .404 win pct in starts for the Rays is the 2nd worst in team history? (although it’s also the 7th best, because they’ve only had 8 players start 500 games.)

So anyway, below is the top 10 list for each team, by which players had the best win percentages when they were in the starting lineup. The data is from 1920 to 2011, and a player needed to make at least 500 starts for the team to be included here. Also included is the number of times the player got hit by a pitch for that team, which is obviously a crucial piece of information.

not that I really need to respond to everything Bill James writes, but…

Monday, February 13th, 2012

It was an interesting bit of timing that Bill James posted an open letter on Grantland.com about why Dwight Evans should be in the Hall of Fame, because just a week or two before I was looking at this list and noticing how high Dwight Evans shows up on it.  It’s the list that you’d get if you tried to see what live ball era players won the most games while in the starting lineup for each team.  With Dwight Evans in the starting lineup, the Red Sox won 1,280 games.  When you take a look at the list of other people who did that, you might notice that it’s a pretty good group of baseball players.  But if you’re not a Dwight Evans fan, you might say “well that just means he was on a lot of really good teams and played a long time – he might just be a Ringo, along for the ride with a great band”.  Well, maybe.  But if he is, he might be the best Ringo since the actual Ringo.  So I don’t buy it.  I’m going with Bill James on this and saying he contributed to a lot of those wins.  (Once again, I’m not talking about “win shares” or any other compiled stat – I’m talking about the team actually winning the game when a particular player starts.)

Here’s the list of the players whose teams have won at least 1200 games in games in which they started, since 1920:
Carl Yastrzemski (BOS) – 1,684
Hank Aaron (ATL) – 1,605
Stan Musial (STL) – 1,577
Brooks Robinson (BAL) – 1,577
Willie Mays (SFG) – 1,519
Pete Rose (CIN) – 1,510
Cal Ripken (BAL) – 1,498
Derek Jeter (NYY) – 1,449
George Brett (KCR) – 1,437
Craig Biggio (HOU) – 1,417
Robin Yount (MIL) – 1,413
Al Kaline (DET) – 1,392
Mel Ott (SFG) – 1,380
Chipper Jones (ATL) – 1,344
Mickey Mantle (NYY) – 1,337
Lou Gehrig (NYY) – 1,318
Dwight Evans (BOS) – 1,280
Pee Wee Reese (LAD) – 1,274
Babe Ruth (NYY) – 1,257
Mike Schmidt (PHI) – 1,227
Dave Concepcion (CIN) – 1,215
Ted Williams (BOS) – 1,210
Roberto Clemente (PIT) – 1,200

Just so you don’t have to go to the trouble of looking them up, there are 6 names on this list that aren’t in the Hall of Fame – Pete Rose (because he’s banned), Derek Jeter (because they make them wait until they retire), Craig Biggio (because they make them wait until 5 years after they retire, instead of just putting up the plaque when they reach 270 HBPs like they would if the world made any sense),  Chipper Jones, Dwight Evans and Dave Concepcion.

So, my thought is that 1200 wins with one team should be an automatic ticket to the hall, although I may have to make an exception in Chipper Jones case, due to his 17 career HBPs at a rate of one plunk every 598 plate appearances.  Imagine how much higher on this list he’d be if he took one for the team a little more often.
