Burnett throws 115th

The Pirates lead the majors in both hitting batter and getting hit by pitches, and they added to both totals yesterday. AJ Burnett threw the 115th plunk he’s ever recorded in the majors, hitting San Francisco’s Brandon Crawford. He is now tied with Rube Waddell for 54th place all time, and he needs 2 more to catch Orel Hershiser, Al Leiter and Darryl Kile, and he needs to hit 5 more to move into the top 50. Jordy Mercer was on the receiving side of a plunk for the Pirates, bringing the Pirates league leading total to 69 HBPs this year.

Alberto Callaspo got hit by a pitch yesterday, something he hasn’t done since May 22, 2011. Callaspo had gone 1,271 plate appearances since last being hit. Scott Feldman delivered the streak breaking plunk, and that one was also plunk number 3,900 in Orioles history.

The Brewers are the third most plunked team in the majors this year, and the 2nd most plunked team (the Reds) helped them out by hitting them twice. Carlos Gomez got hit in the 2nd inning and Norichika Aoki got hit in the 9th. Both have been hit 9 times this year, and the Brewers have been hit 59 times, and the Reds have been hit 62 times this year.
