Starling Marte only has 23 HBPs in his career, but 20 of them were this season. Adam Wainwright threw number 20 of Marte’s 2013 season last night in the 5th inning of the Carinals-Pirates game. Marte’s season is the 110th 20 plunk season in major league history, and the 9th by a Pirate. He joins Jacke Beckley, Jason Kendall and Craig Wilson as the only Pirates who have had 20 plunk seasons. Kendall had 4, and Wilson and Beckley did it twice each.
Marte’s career plunk rate is currently one plunk every 29.9 plate appearances, which is in the neighborhood of Carlos Quentin’s rate of a plunk every 25.1 plate appearances. But, neither of them is in the category of Jermain Curtis who made his debut in that same Cardinals-Pirates game. He got hit in his 3rd major league plate appearance, and now has an HBP once every 4 plate appearances. If he can keep that pace up, he’ll really be setting some records.
Carlos Gomez capitalized on facing the Rangers on a Tuesday by getting hit by a pitch. The Rangers hav thrown 11 of their 38 plunks (29%) this season on Tuesdays. Gomez has 8 plunks this year.
