July 23rd, 2012 by pbr

In yesterday’s 15 major league baseball games there were 4,444 pitches thrown, and of those 4,444 pitches, 5 of them hit a batter.  Of the 5 pitches that hit a batter, 4 of them hi batters born in Venezuela.  Gerardo Parra, Miguel Cairo, Elvis Andrus and Maicer Izturis were all plunked yesterday.  The only other HBP recipient was Missouri born Ryan Howard.

Barry Zito hit Ryan Howard, bringing Zito’s career total to 91 hit batters.  He’s 11th among active pitchers, tied with Bronson Arroyo.  Zito has hit 3 batters on July 22nd.

Dan Haren hit Elvis Andrus, and that’s the 2nd time that’s happened.   Haren threw Andrus’ 9th plunk on July 31, 2010 and threw his 18th career plunk yesterday.

Michael Fiers threw his first career HBP, hitting Miguel Cairo.  That made Fiers the 286th pitcher to hit a batter for the Brewers.  Miguel Cairo has been hit 3 times against the Brewers, and that ties him with Miguel Tejada for the most plunks facing the Brewers by a batter named Miguel.  The Brewers have hit 9 batters named Miguel in team history.
