Jamaican plunk record holder hits New Mexico plunk record holder

May 14th, 2012 by pbr

Justin Masterson hit 3 Red Sox batters yesterday, for his 40th, 41st, and 42nd career plunks. Masterson is the only real pitcher* born in Jamaica ever to hit a batter, and his 40th plunk landed on Cody Ross. Ross is the most plunked batter born in New Mexico, with 34.
*-Chili Davis was born in Jamaica, and he hit a batter in his only career pitching appearance.

Barry Zito also hit a batter yesterday, making that his 89th. He’s hit more batters than any other two pitchers born in Nevada.

White Sox rookie pitcher Addison Reed picked a bad time to throw his first career plunk, hitting Billy Butler with the bases loaded. Reed is the first pitcher this year to pick a bases loaded situation to throw the first plunk of his career, but shouldn’t feel too bad about that because it’s a remarkably common appearance. Four pitchers threw their first HBP as an RBI plunk last year, and Reed is the 125th pitcher since 1969 to do that. The last year in which no pitcher threw his first plunk as an RBI plunk was 1977.
