Luke Hochevar has now hit Alex Rodriguez with a pitch twice, after he delivered a 92mph pitch to the Yankees 3rd baseman in the 3rd inning yesterday. That pushed Rodriguez to a career total of 160 HBPs, making him the 16th player ever to reach that total. That was the 6700th plunk ever to land on a batter born in New York.
Bryce Harper got hit by a pitch from Cole Hamels, making him the first ever batter born in 1992 to get hit by a pitch. He’s only a little over 19 and a half years old, so the only person during Harper’s lifetime to get plunked at a younger age was Adrian Beltre. Hamels got hit by a pitch himself two innings later, becoming just the 2nd pitcher this season to take a plunk. The other was fellow Phillie Joe Blanton.
Including Hamels, four different batters who were 9th in the batting order got hit by pitches yesterday. That’s the highest single day total for number 9 hitters this year.
