Jamie Moyer‘s comeback became official yesterday when he faced Giants first basemen Brett Pill and hit him with a pitch. At 49 years 4 months old, that make Moyer the oldest pitcher ever to throw a major league plunk. The previous record was 48 years 11 months by Jack Quinn – he hit Stan Hack on June 7, 1932. Quinn pitched past his 50th birthday but didn’t hit a batter after turning 49. But Moyer did, and yesterday’s was his 145th career plunk thrown. That gives him sole possession of 22nd place on the all time list, ahead of Win Mercer and one plunk behind Silver King. For Pill, it was his first major league plunk and he the 634th batter to take a plunk for the Giants.
In Detroit, Carlos Pena got his 60th career plunk on a throw from Tigers rookie pitcher Drew Smyly. That plunk was also the 600th in Comerica Park history. Also, that was the 4,499th plunk ever thrown by a Tigers pitcher. Two innings later, Collin Balestar hit Desmond Jennings and that one was the 4,500th plunk ever thrown by the Tigers. They’re the first American League franchise to hit 4500 batters.
