Rodriguez gets 158th

April 11th, 2012 by pbr

Wei-Yin Chen made his Major League debut for the Orioles last night, and he made an impact early, hitting Alex Rodriguez with a pitch in the first inning.   That was number 158 for Rodriguez, putting him into 16th place on the all time list, tied again with Derek Jeter.  Chen is the first pitcher from Taiwan to plunk Alex Rodriguez, and he’s the 514th pitcher to hit a batter for the Orioles.  Matt Lindstrom became the 515th when he hit Nick Swisher later in the game.  Swisher’s plunk was the 4300th in Yankees history.

In Chicago, Paul Maholm resumed his favorite hobby of hitting Brewers batters with pitches.  He hit Corey Hart and Mat Gamel in the first inning.  That was the 2nd time he’s plunked Corey Hart, and he has now hit 10 Brewers.  That makes him just the 6th pitcher ever to hit 10 Brewers, and he’s 4 short of Kerry Wood‘s record for plunking Brewers.  Those were plunks 54 and 55 of Maholm’s career.   Also in that game Alex Gonzalez got his 77th career plunk on a throw from Rodrigo Lopez.  That plunk was the 100th time a Cubs pitcher has hit a Brewers batter (though only 66 have been thrown in the other direction in that matchup).

In Cincinnati, Kyle Lohse threw the 70th plunk of his career, hitting Zack Cozart.  That was Cozart’s first in the majors.  Also in that game, Lance Berkman picked up plunk number 65 of his career.

Gerardo Parra got hit by a pitch in the 11th inning of the Dbacks-Padres game, which put him on base to score the go-ahead run when Chris Young followed him with a home run.

It appears that “Ed Corey” was tagged instead of “Corey Hart”

Oh that’s a new internet joke – instead of trying to trick people into clicking on links that take you to Rick Astley’s “Never gonna give you up” video, it’s all about trying to get people to go Ed Corey’s baseball reference page. Although I thought it was supposed to be Rick Aguillera’s BR page.
