Brewers pitcher Randy Wolf moved a step closer to 100 career plunks thrown, by throwing his 96th career plunk yesterday. He hit Cardinals infielder Tyler Greene. Greene has now been hit 12 times in his career, and Wolf has been responsible for two of those. Wolf is currently 8th among active pitchers, and needs to throw 4 more to join the 100 plunk club.
The Red Sox and Tigers plunked each other 4 times yesterday, with 2 of those hitting Kelly Shoppach. Shoppach had an 18 plunk season back in 2007, and this could be a sign that he’s back on form for a season like that, but it remains to be seen if he can earn enough playing time to really show how good he can be at getting hit by a lot of pitches.
Also yesterday, Ervin Santana hit Alcides Escobar for the 2nd time in his career, giving Santana a career total of 66 hit batters. He’s 7 plunks short of John Lackey‘s career record for plunks by an Angel. Escobar has only been hit 10 times, but Santana has thrown 20% of those.
