April 7th, 2012 by pbr

2,530 pitches were thrown in yesterday’s MLB games, and four of them resulted in batters being hit by them.  April 6, 2012 will now be know to fans of plunking Mark Teixeira as the day he collected his 90th career plunk.    James Shields threw that one, making that the 2nd time he’s added to Teixeira’s plunk total.  Shields threw Teixeira’s 51st HBP on August 19, 2008.  James Shields has now hit 39 batters, and 3 of those have been thrown on April 6th.  He’s also 4 plunks away from tying Victor Zambrano of the Rays franchise record for career plunks.

Cardinals reliever Kyle McClellan plunked Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy in the 9th inning in Milwaukee yesterday, and that was the 4,900th plunk ever thrown by the Cardinals franchise.  Only 96 of those have landed on Brewers batters.  Lucroy had gone 370 plate appearances since his last plunk.

Colby Lewis of the Rangers plunked Alex Rios of the White Sox yesterday, making that the 200th time the Rangers have hit a White Sox batter, and Jeremy Affeldt threw his 30th career plunk hitting Miguel Montero.
