Red Sox and Rays celebrate 259th plunk in series history

Saturday, May 31st, 2014

It was a strange moment in the Red Sox-Rays game last night when David Price hit Mike Carp with a pitch, and both teams stopped the game to celebrate the 259th plunk ever recorded in a Red Sox-Rays game. Then some players notice that it was kind of strange to celebrate the 259th of something – “Why 259? This is stupid” Shouted David Ortiz, while David Price shouted back “No, You’re stupid – this was all your team’s idea” and other harsh words spoiled the party. Earlier in the game, Red Sox manager John Farrell was ejected after David Ortiz got plunked and a dispute over whether that one was the 258th or 259th plunk had occurred. Which seems kind of harsh. Then in the 10th inning, Jonny Gomes got hit by a pitch, putting him on base to score the winning run when AJ Pierzynski hit a walkoff triple.

The Red Sox seem to have an odd relationship with HBPs this year, leading the AL in getting hit by pitches with 27, but dead last in the majors in throwing plunks, with only 5. If the Red Sox don’t hit a batter today, this will be their lowest total at the end of May since 1961. They haven’t gotten out of May with under 10 plunks thrown since 1994.

Choo leads AL with 8 plunks

Friday, May 30th, 2014

Of the 2865 pitches thrown yesterday, only one hit Shin-Soo Choo. But, Choo had already been hit 7 times before yesterday, so that gives him a season total of 8. That makes him the American League leader, and tied with Neil Walker and Derek Dietrich for the major league lead in this year’s plunk race. Brian Duensing was yesterday’s contributor to Choo’s plunk total.

For his career, Choo is up to 89 plunks.

Q! 124

Thursday, May 29th, 2014

Carlos Quentin got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded last night, in the 8th inning of the Padres-Diamondbacks game, with Joe Thatcher on the mound. That was Quentin’s 7th time taking a plunk with the bases loaded. Among active players, only AJ Pierzynski has more RBI plunks, with 8, and Jason Giambi and Paul Konerko are the only other active players with 7 RBI HBPs. For his career, Q! is up to 124 HBPs, which ranks 46th on the all time list. He needs one more to tie Honus Wagner for 45th place.
If Quentin can get going in the HBP category, that should boost the Padres plunk-based offense, which ranks last in the majors with only 10.

Ian Desmond got plunked for the Nationals yesterday making that the 5th consecutive game in which a Nationals batter has been hit by a pitch. That’s their longest streak since 2006.

CJ Wilson threw his 60th career plunk yesterday, and Ian Desmond’s was his 20th.
