Choo ties Quentin for most plunks since 2011

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

Carlos Quentin got hit by 49 total pitches in the 2011 to 2013 seasons leading the majors in plunks for those years, but Shin-Soo Choo has now been hit 3 times this year, after Scott Kazmir hit him last night, and that means Choo and Quentin are tied at 49 plunks since the beginning of 2011. Josh Willingham is the next most plunked batter in that span with 40, and Jon Jay, Danny Espinosa and Prince Fielder have 38 each. Choo is up to 84 plunks for his career, and Kazmir has hit 51.

Wellington Castillo got hit by Alfredo Simon in the Cubs-Reds game last night, and that was plunk number 700 in the history of Great American Ball Park. Howie Kendrick‘s plunk from Corey Kluber was number 1995 at Angels Stadium. Alexander Torres’ plunking of Brandon Crawford was the 1600th ever thrown by Padres pitchers.

Orioles get hit by no pitches

Monday, April 28th, 2014

The Baltimore Orioles entered yesterday with a 5 game getting hit streak, matching their live ball era record for consecutive games with a plunk, but they didn’t get hit by any pitches yesterday, failing to establish a new record. But, they can always try again to start a new streak today.

AJ Burnett hit Miguel Montero yesterday pushing Burnett’s career total to 119. 119 plunks leaves Burnett one hit batter away from the top 50 on the all time list.

Giambi does 180

Sunday, April 27th, 2014

Jason Giambi is the 11th most plunked major leaguer ever, and yesterday he got hit by Sergio Romo of the Giants. That gives Giambi a career total of 180 HBPs and leaves him 3 plunks away from tying Jake Beckley as the most plunked left handed batter ever. Beckley got hit 183 times from 1888 to 1907. Giambi has been hit by 28 of 30 major league teams, including 4 times by the Giants.

Rickie Weeks has been hit 100 times by teams that aren’t the Cubs, but yesterday the Cubs hit him for the 18th time, bringing his career total to 118. If Weeks had been hit by the rest of the league at the same rate the Cubs have hit him, he’d have 170 career plunks. Weeks is now tied with Jason Kendall as the 3rd most plunked Cubs opponent of the last 50 years, behind Craig Biggio‘s 19 and Ron Hunt‘s 25 plunks against the Cubs. That plunk was also Weeks’ 59th at Miller Park.

The Orioles have been hit in 5 consecutive games, which ties their longest streak of the live ball era. They’ve had 5 game plunk streaks in 1997, 2002, 2003 and 2010, but they’ve never reached 6 games with a plunk.

Prince Fielder also got hit by a pitch yesterday, bringing his total to 106. The Mariners are the 27th team to plunk Prince, and he just needs to get hit by the Tigers, Orioles and Brewers to have been plunked by every team.
