The Plunk Signal Explainer

Monday, March 31st, 2014

Hey, what’s all the gibberish in the plunk signal (@PlunkSignal) twitter feed? I’m glad you asked. Let’s look at a sample HBP from earlier today:

Well, the obvious part is that Matt Joyce of Tampa Bay got hit by a pitch, and Jeremy Jeffress of Toronto hit him. In the 8th inning, and the pitch was traveling at 80.1mph according to pitch f/x. Also, according to pitch f/x it was a curve ball. That’s what the CU stands for. The full list of pitch f/x pitch codes is at the bottom of this post.

After that we get this bit: B-g1s1c18 P-g2s2c2. B stands for Batter and P stands for Pitcher. g is for Game, s is for season and c is for Career. So that says Matt Joyce has been hit once in this game, has been hit once this year, and his career total is now 18. Jeremy Jeffress has hit 2 batters in the game, and also two this season and 2 in his career. You won’t see that line very often.

That much you’ll see on almost every PlunkSignal tweet. (It skips the pitch speed and type of pitch f/x doesn’t record them for some reason – that happens sometimes). After that, sometimes there’s more, depending on the character limit. It’s random. In this case it shows that the Rays have been hit 886 times in franchise history.

And that’s all there is to the plunk signal.

Here are all those pitch f/x two letter pitch codes:
FA – Fastball
FF – Fours seem fastball
FT – two seem fastball
FC – cutter
FS – fastball/sinker
SI – Sinkier
SF – Split finger
CR or CU – Curveball
CH – Changeup
SL – Slider
KC – Knuckleball
KC – Knucklecurve
