Fielder reaches 103 plunks

Saturday, August 31st, 2013

Mark Rzepczynski hit Prince Fielder with a pitch yesterday, improving Fielder’s career plunk total to 103. Fielder is now in a 4 way tie for 72nd place on the all time list for career HBPs, with Josh Willingham, Vlad Guerrero and Tris Speaker.

Hector Santiago hit Jonny Gomes for the 2nd time this season, giving Santiago a season total of 14 batters hit by pitches. He’s 2 plunks behind Justin Masterson in the race for the 2013 Phil Knell Award, given each year, by me, to the pitcher who hits the most batters.

Carlos Gomez got hit by a pitch for the 10th time this year, making this his first season with double digit plunks.

This Just in

Friday, August 30th, 2013

Yesterday saw the most plunks of players by Justin ever recorded on a single day. 3 Justins plunked in one day is a new MLB record. Justin Maxwell, Justin Upton and Justin Turner were all hit by pitches, and Turner was hit by Justin De Fratus. This is the third consecutive season in which a pitcher named Justin has hit a batter named Justin.

Also, Ben Zobrist got hit by a pitch, but that doesn’t really fit in with the day’s theme.

Justin Upton’s plunk was his 40th.

Kinsler extends Rangers record, Ramirez takes 107th

Thursday, August 29th, 2013

Aramis Ramirez took a 77mph plunking from Charlie Morton last night increasing his career HBP total to 107. That puts him in a four way tie for 64th place on the all time list, with Pete Rose, Jason LaRue, and Wally Schang. Ramirez needs one more plunk to tie Fernando Vina for 4th place in NL Central division plunk history, and he ranks 27th in Brewers history at the moment. Charlie Morton has now hit 13 batters this season, and is tied with Julio Teheran for the National League lead in the hitting batters category. Morton’s Pirates lead the majors with 61 plunks thrown.

Ian Kinsler extend his Rangers record for career plunks, taking the 57th of his career on a 73mph pitch from Seattle’s Brandon Maurer. Kinsler has a 34 plunk lead on the next most plunked player on the Rangers roster.

Justin Masterson threw his 16th plunk of the year, hitting Atlanta’s BJ Upton. Masterson now has a one plunk lead on Doug Fister for the 2013 plunking title. That HBP was also the first ever in a regular season game between the Braves and Indians.
