Zito hits Frandsen

Wednesday, July 31st, 2013

Barry Zito is now just 3 HBPs away from the 100 plunk club. He threw plunk number 97 of his career last night, landing it on Kevin Frandsen. Frandsen has 28 plunks to his credit, which hasn’t really lived up to his debut in 2006 when he got began his major league career with a 3 game plunks streak. Zito is 5 plunks behind Carlos Zambrano for the record for most plunks thrown by a pitcher whose last name starts with Z.

The Tigers did not get hit by a pitch yesterday, making that the 21st consecutive game without a plunk. That’s their longest plunk-free streak since 1993, and they haven’t had 22 consecutive plunkless games since 1990.

Westbrook plunks Walker and Martin and Walker

Tuesday, July 30th, 2013

Not in that order.

Jake Westbrook hit three Pirates last night. He hit Neil Walker in the 1st inning, Neil Walker in the 4th inning, and Russel Martin in the 5th inning. All that plunking moved the Pirates into first place in the season HBP standings, one ahead of the Reds. Walker has now been hit 12 times this season, which is tied for third place among 2013 season plunk totals. He’s 10 plunks behind Shin-Soo Choo, and 5 plunks behind teammate Starling Marte. This was Westbrook’s first 3 plunk game in the majors, and he now has 65 career hit batters on his record.

Vic Black threw his first career HBP in that game, hitting the 6th batter he faced in his career.

22 for Choo

Monday, July 29th, 2013

Shin-Soo Choo has only been hit by two pitches in July, and that’s not very interesting. But he got hit 20 times before July, and that makes every Choo plunk for the rest of the year interesting, because he leads the league by 5 plunks, and he’s two plunks away from the Reds single season record. Jason Larue got hit 24 times in 2004, but Choo needs to get hit just three more times to break that record. Choo’s 22nd plunk of the season was delivered yesterday by 22 year old Paco Rodriguez, who is the youngest pitcher to hit Choo this year.
If Choo could get hit 10 more times this year, he would set a new single season record for HBPs by a left handed batter.

Four other batters were hit by pitches yesterday, but none of them were hit 21 times during the rest of the season.
