Fister hits 12th

Friday, May 31st, 2013

Since 1969 when Major League Baseball split the American and National Leagues into divisions, only two pitchers have hit twelve batters before the end of May – Pedro Astacio in 1998, and Doug Fister in 2013. Fister hit his 12th batter of the season last night, with a 90.2mph plunking of Pirates second baseman Neil Walker. The Tigers single season record for hitting batters is 23 plunks, and Fister is the 46th Tigers pitcher to hit a dozen batters in a season.

Lucas Harrell of the Astros hit Rockies batter DJ LeMahieu yesterday, making that the 54th time the Astros have hit the Rockies, but Adam Ottavino of the Rockies hit Ronny Cedeno in that same game, making that the 101st time the Rockies have hit Astros batters. It may take a while to even up that score board.

Homer Bailey hit Asdrubel Cabrera in the Reds-Indians game, making that the 999th plunk in Progressive Field history.

Donovan Hand became the 292nd pitcher in Brewers history to hit at least one batter, hitting Brian Dozier.

2000 Brewers hit by pitches!

Thursday, May 30th, 2013

Samuel Deduno became the 11th pitcher ever to hit 3 Brewers in one game last night, and he pushed the Brewers past an important milestone. Deduno hit Norichika Aoki for the Brewers 1999th plunk, then Rickie Weeks for number 2000th in Brewers history, and finally he hit Jean Segura for the 2001st* plunk in Brewers history. The Brewers first 2000 plunks split 1,047 in road games, and 953 in home games. In the home games, the Brewers were hit 533 times at County Stadium, 401 times at Miller Park, and 19 times at Sick’s Stadium when they were known as the Seattle Pilots. 98 of the Brewers 2000 plunks have been thrown by the Twins, and 47 of those have been in road games. The Brewers have been hit 6 times at Target Field, and Rickie Weeks had been the target of 3 of those. Weeks ranks 6th on the Target Field plunk list, despite not playing in the same league as the Twins.

Rickie Weeks’ plunk was a Brewers record 110th, meaning he has accounted for 5.5% of all Brewers HBPs. Weeks is now tied for 57th place in MLB plunk history, with George Burns.

The Brewers are the 19th franchise to get hit by 2000 pitches, and they’re the first among the 1969 expansion teams to reach 2000.

*-correction – an earlier miscalculation had Segura’s plunk listed as 2000, when in fact Rickie Weeks plunk last night was number 2000.

14 for Choo!

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

No left handed batter for the Cincinnati Reds has ever been hit more than 15 times in a single season, but as of yesterday, Shin-Soo Choo has been hit 14 times with 110 games left to play this year. Choo got his 14th of the year against his old team, the Indians, and pitcher Scott Barnes last night. If Choo keeps up his current rate of plunks per game, he’ll get hit 43 times this year.

Brewers pinch hitter Jeff Bianchi picked a nice time for his first major league HBP, getting it in his 9th inning pinch hit appearance last night, with the Brewers down by one run. That plunk put him on base to score the tying run, and send the game into extra innings. Bianchi is the 255th batter in Brewers history to get hit by at least one pitch, and that plunk was number 1,997 in Brewers history.

Carlos Corporan‘s plunk against Jorge De La Rosa was the 100th time the Astros have been plunked by the Rockies. Craig Biggio accounted for 33 of those.

Tejada gets 122nd, Wright 3 short of Mets record

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

Adam Wainwright hit Miguel Tejada with a pitch yesterday, and that plunk moved Tejada ahead of Reed Johnson for sole possession of 45th place on the all time list for career HBPs. Tejada has now been hit 122 times, and is 3 plunks behind the career total of Honus Wagner. Tejada has been hit 4 times now by the Cardinals, and has been plunked by 28 different teams.

Also in yesterday’s action, David Wright got plunked by Yankees pitcher David Robertson. That was the 25th time the Mets have been hit by Yankees pitchers, and the 38th career plunk for Wright. Wright is alone in 3rd place in Mets HBP history, just 1 plunk behind Cleon Jones for 2nd place, and 3 plunks away from tying Ron Hunt for the franchise record for career plunks. That plunk was also just the 7th time since 1969 that a pitcher named David hit a batter named David.
