Batters who hit better after being hit

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

Recently, reader PagsBrewCrew asked if some batters became better hitters after being recently plunked, possibly looking for some kind of Popeye-Spinach effect for some batters. So, below are the differences in OPS for plate appearances by batters who had been hit by a pitch earlier in a game compared to their season totals. Kelly Shoppach, for example, has 10 plate appearances this year in situations where he’d been hit by a pitch earlier in the game. And his OPS in those 10 plate appearances is 1.500. His OPS for the season is .832, so getting hit by a pitch appears to give him a temporary improvement of .668 to his OPS.

Below is every player who has had at least 10 plate appearances after getting hit by pitches.

Prince gets 10th

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

So far this season, 473,370 pitches have been thrown in major league games, and 995 of those pitches have hit batters. 594 players have pitched, and 372 of those pitchers have hit a batter. 863 players have had at least one plate appearance batting this year, and 356 of those batters have been hit by pitch. Yesterday, 3,522 pitchers were thrown, and 9 batters got hit by pitches.

Prince Fielder was among yesterdays plunked batters, getting hit in the 4th inning by Ivan Nova. That was Fielder’s 10th plunk this year, and this is now his 6th season with double digit plunks. If he’d gotten hit one more time in 2009 he’d now have a streak of 7 consecutive double digit plunk seasons. But he doesn’t. He does have 88 career plunks though, and that’s 34 more plunks than any player under 29 years old right now.

Albert Pujols collected plunk number 81 of his career yesterday, Pat Neshek threw that one. Domonic Brown of the Phillies, and Tyler Moore of the Nationals both got their first plunk as a major leaguer. Carlos Corporan got hit for the Astros yesterday, making that the Astros 13 plunk of the season recorded on a Monday. They’ve been hit 40 times overall, but 13 times on Mondays.
