Danny Espinosa reached double digits in HBPs for the season when Ricky Nolasco hit him yesterday, making this the 2nd consecutive year for the Nationals second basemen with at least 10 HBPs. He’s tied for 3rd in the NL with Rickie Weeks and Ryan Braun, and he’s up to 29 plunks for his career. Espinosa is the first National to get 10 plunks in consecutive years since Nick Johnson in 2005 and 2006.
Pirates rookie Starling Marte got his first career HBP, and it only took him 44 plate appearances. He’s the 702nd player to take a plunk for the Pirates.
Ichiro got plunked by the Mariners again, and that particular plunk was the 200th in the history of games between the Mariners and Yankees. He’s now been hit twice as a Yankee facing Seattle, but he only got hit once as a Mariner facing the Yankees.
