Active batter plunk rates

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

Just in case you ever wondered why Carlos Quentin’s name gets mentioned on this site a lot, and Nick Punto and Endy Chavez almost never get their name on the front page of Plunk Everyone, the list below should explain it. Over their careers, Quentin has been plunked 58 times more often per plate appearance than Endy Chavez.

Below is every player with at least 1500 plate appearances, who has played in 2012, and how often they get hit by pitches.  (Career totals, through games played on July 2, 2012)

8th plunks

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

Ryan Braun, Edwin Encarnacion and Carlos Quentin all recorded their 8th plunks of the 2012 season yesterday, among the 13 batters plunked in major league action.

Quentin’s 8th of 2012 was his 105th overall, served up by Arizona’s Brad Ziegler. Quentin is now tied for 65th place on the all time list, tied with Dan Brouthers and Mark Grudzielanek. He’s been getting hit at a rate of one plunk every 14.5 plate appearances, which means if he hadn’t been hurt for the first 2 months of the season, and he’d had as many plate appearances as Edwin Encarnacion, for example, Q! would be up around 22 plunks already. The Padre’s single season record is 15.

Ryan Braun also had his 8th plunking of the year, and his 45th career HBP. That plunk also made Braun the 4th batter to get hit 25 times and Miller Park. Carlos Zambrano threw that one, and it was his 98th career plunk thrown. He’s 90th on the all time hit batters list, tied with Tommy John, Tim Keefe, Jack Billingham and Don Cardwell. But he’s 1st among pitchers born in Venezuela.
Aramis Ramirez also picked up a plunk in that game, bringing his career total to 94.

Edwin Encarnacion was the last among yesterday’s 8th plunk recipients, getting his 8 of 2012 from Everett Teaford. Encarnacion is up to 58 HBPs for his career.
