Weeks gets 99th!

Saturday, June 16th, 2012

Perhaps inspired by Carlos Quentin reaching the 100 plunk milestone last week, Rickie Weeks took a plunk from Francisco Liriano giving him a career total of 99. Weeks needs one more plunk before Septermber 13th to become the 14th player ever to reach 100 plunks before turning 30 years old. Weeks has been hit twice now by Liriano, 4 times by the Twins, and twice at Target Field. He’s been hit 4 times by three different pitchers name Francisco. Only Carlos’s (9) have hit Rickie Weeks more than Franciscos, but Ryans and Matts have also hit Weeks 4 times. Weeks has been hit 4 times on Fridays by pitchers born in the Dominican Republic.
That was the 40th plunk for the Brewers this season, and their 15th on a Friday. There are 7 teams that haven’t been hit 15 times yet this season, but the Brewers have that many on Fridays. Only two other teams since 1920 have been hit 15 times on the same day of the week by the end of June. The Brewers have never reached the 40 HBP mark before July.

Interesting note from the Mets-Reds game yesterday. Joey Votto took an HBP from Dillon Gee in the 3rd inning, but in the 8th inning the Mets left David Wright in the game to get plunked by Sean Marshall. That was Wright’s first HBP this year. You may recall earlier this year Wright was lifted in a game against the Brewers in which the Mets had plunked Ryan Braun and the Mets manager was very sure the Brewers would retaliate. I’m sure yesterday’s was just a coincidental plunking though – certainly not a case of “you hit our all star corner infielder batting third, we’ll hit your all star corner infielder batting third”. The Reds have hit 20 batters this year, while the Brewers have hit 14.

Diamondbacks pitcher Trevor Cahill hit Hank Conger of the Angels, and that was the 2100th plunk ever recorded at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
