Jason Giambi is the 2nd most plunked left handed batter ever, and last night he moved a step closer to first place collecting his 175th career hbp. He’s in 12th place overall, 3 behind Andres Galarraga, and 8 behind Jake Beckley. Beckley holds the left-handed HBP record with 183. At 41.4 years old, Giambi is only the 2nd oldest batter hit by a pitch this month, because Jim Thome was plunked on the 10th. This is the first month in which two different players at least 41 years old have been plunked in the same month since September 2007 when Moises Alou and Barry Bonds got hit by pitches.
Joaquin Arias got a rare plunk from Houston JA Happ yesterday. First it was rare because Happ had faced 982 batters since the last time he hit someone, and secondly it was rare because Arias got hit in a game while his team was pitching a perfect game. Gordon Beckham got hit in Phillip Humber’s perfect game earlier this year, Jayson Nix got hit during Mark Buehrle‘s perfect game in 2009, Chuck Knoblauch and Scott Brosius got hit during David Cone‘s perfect game in 1999, and in 1968 John Donaldson was hit during Catfish Hunter‘s perfect game. And that’s all the batters who have been plunked in perfect games since 1920. What’s more interesting about that list is that Arias and Scott Brosius were the only ones on the list who weren’t playing 2nd base.
