Brendan Ryan snaps Mariners plunkless streak

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

Alex White of the Rockies hit Mariners short stop Brendan Ryan with a pitch yesterday, ending the Mariners streak at 28 plunkless games. Ryan has been hit twice this year, and the Mariners have been hit 3 times. Their streak was broken one short of their franchise record, set in 1990 when they got missed by every pitch for 29 consecutive games.

Paul Konerko picked up his 92nd career plunk, and his 5th facing the Cubs. He’s one plunk behind AJ Pieizynski for the record in whatever they call the series between the Cubs and White Sox. Aramis Ramirez is the only other player with 5 plunks in whatever they call the series between the Cubs and White Sox. That was Konerko’s 10th interleague plunk. And, that was HBP number 4,495 in White Sox history.

The Rangers picked up their 1900th plunk in franchise history when Elvis Andrus got hit by Rhiner Cruz.

Danny Espinosa got his first 2012 HBP yesterday, bringing his career total to 20. At this time last year, Epsinosa already had 7 HBPs. I blame Nationals management for refusing to let Espinosa live up to his HBP potential.

Eric Young, Steve Lombardi, and Sean Rodriguez all got hit by pitches while pinch hitting yesterday, making that the first day with three pinch hit plunks since September 11, 2010. There hasn’t been a day with 4 pinch hit HBPs in the last 40 years.
