Catcher plunk counts

Friday, March 16th, 2012

You probably know that Jason Kendall got hit by 254 pitches in his major league career, but a fact that might not be right on the top of your brain’s stack of baseball trivia is that he was behind the plate while 690 batters where hit by pitches. But, he hasn’t played since 2010, and very few people not named Jason Kendall really expect he’ll be back. 2010 also saw the last of Brad Ausmus who was catching while 618 batters got plunked. Then just this spring, Jason Varitek and Jorge Posada retired – they had 610 and 520 plunks occur while they were catching. And, Ivan Rodriguez hasn’t been offered a job this year, so if he continues to be inactive, he’ll end his career 21 plunks short of Kendall with 669 in the plunks watched from behind the plate category.

Those five veteran catchers who have (more or less) retired in the past 5 seasons saw a combined 3,107 HBPs while they were behind the plate. The top 10 active catchers going in to 2012 have only had 3,033 plunks thrown while they were catching.

Here are the top 15 of the remaining active catchers:
