Sean Rodriguez breaks Ray single season record!!

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

The Rays joined the Major Leagues in 1998, but in the 13 seasons prior to this one none of their players have been hit by 15 pitches in a single season. Johnny Gomes came the closest with 14 in 2005, but now the Rays have a new king of getting hit by pitches in a season. Utility infielder Sean Rodriguez got hit by Alfredo Aceves of the Red Sox last night, giving him 15 for the season. A new Rays record! He’s been hit twice by the Red Sox, three times by the Blue Jays, and once each by the Orioles, White Sox, Marlins, Royals, Brewers, Twins, A’s and Mariners. He’s also the only Ray ever to get hit by 11 different teams in a season. So congratulations to Sean Rodriguez on his record breaking season!

Jason Giambi got hit by Travis Wood yesterday giving him 173 career HBPs. That moves him ahead of Carlos Delgado on the all time list and makes the 2nd most plunked left handed batter of all time. Only Jake Beckley has more, with 183. Giambi is now tied with Curt Welch for 12th place on the all time career HBP list.

Alexi Ogando‘s plunking of Mark Ellis yesterday was the 200th time the Rangers have ever plunked the A’s.
