Gee hits 14th

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Mets rookie Dillon Gee hit Dan Uggla yesterday extending his National League leading total for hit batters to 14. If he hits 3 more, he’ll break Pedro Astacio’s record for single season hit batters by a Mets pitcher. Prior to Gee, only 4 Mets pitchers have hit 14 batters in a season – Astacio (16) in 2002, Victor Zambrano (15) 2005, Kevin Appier (15) in 2001, and Nolan Ryan (15) in 1971. None of those other pitchers were rookies, so that must mean Dillon Gee now owns the Mets Rookie record for hitting batters.
Tim Byrdak also hit a batter for the Mets yesterday, giving them 63 hit batters for the season. No Mets team has hit more than 70 batters in a single season, but this team could break that record.

Jo-Jo Reyes threw the 800th plunk ever delivered by a pitcher born in 1984 when he hit Curtis Granderson yesterday, and Brent Lillibridge collected the 900th plunk ever recorded by a player born in 1983.

Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy got his first career HBP yesterday, making that just the 8th time this year that a pitcher has been hit by a pitch.
