Espinosa re-takes NL lead

Sunday, September 4th, 2011

Danny Espinosa returned from his month long vacation from getting hit by pitches with a 2nd inning plunk from Dillon Gee yesterday. Espinosa now has 17 for the season (and his career), giving him a 1 HBP lead on Justin Upton in the NL HBP race. Unfortunately Espinosa’s 34 game plunkless streak have made it much less likely that he’ll get the 23 HBPs he needs to break the MLB record for rookie plunks. But it’s still possible. Dillon Gee also took back the National League lead in hitting batters, as that plunk to Espinosa was his 13th of the season. He’s one ahead of Tim Hudson and Randy Wolf in a tight race for the National League Phil Knell award. (The Phil Knell award is given to the pitcher in each league who hits the most batters in the season). Only one Mets pitcher has won that award – Pedro Astacio in 2002. But he had to share it with Kerry Wood, since they both hit 16 batters that year. Gee could be the first to win the award outright.
