Verlander plunks Indians for the 16th time

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Justin Verlander threw his 54th career plunk last night when he hit Indians batter Carlos Santana. That ties him with Jeff Weaver for 11th place on the Tigers all time plunks list, but it was also the 16th time he’s hit the Detroit Tigers. That leads all active pitchers in plunkings of the Tigers. Among active pitchers, Verlander is the only one who has hit over 50 batters and thrown 25% of those plunks at one team. The only other who has 50 plunks with 20% of them against one team is Mark Buehrle, and the team he’s thrown 20+% of his plunks at is also the Indians.

Juan Nicasio, Tommy Hottovy, Michael Kirkman and Craig Kimbrel all threw their first career plunk last night.
