Brett Gardner got plunked by Brett Anderson in the 4th inning of last night’s Yankees/A’s game, and the significance of that is that it was the 500th HBP of the 2011 baseball season. It was also the first time in major league history that a pitcher named Brett plunked a batter named Brett.
In Cincinnati, Prince Fielder became the 10th Milwaukee Brewer to be plunked by a pitcher named Chad when he took his 75th career plunk on a pitch by Chad Reineke. Fielder now has a 27 plunk lead on any batter born after January 1, 1983. And, he has the 6th most HBPs of any left handed batter born in the month of May.
Michael Cuddyer got his 41st career plunk yesterday, donated by Max Scherzer, which puts him into a tie with Billy Nash for 4th place among batters born in Virginia. He’ll need 92 more plunks to to break the Virginia record though, which is currently 132, by Steve Brodie.
