HBPs of note: June 8, 2010
Steven Strasburg didn’t hit any batters in his major league debut. Now, on to the more important news.
Chase Utley was hit by a pitch for the 113th time in his career, with an 8th inning plunk off Clay Hensley. That put him on base to score the go ahead run in the Phillies victory, and put him one plunk behind Scott Rolen, Bill Freehan and Frank Crosetti for 45th place on the all time HBP list. That plunk was also Utley’s 50th career HBP at Citizen’s Bank Park. Utley is the only active player with 50 HBPs in his current home park. Melvin Mora and Derek Jeter are the only other active players with 50 plunks in one ballpark, but Jeter’s 50 (66 actually) were in old Yankee Stadium, and Mora had 58 at Camden Yards but he now plays in Colorado. Hensley is the first Clay to plunk Chase Utley.
Also among last night’s clutch plunks was Rickie Weeks, who got his 70th career plunk and then scored the tying run in the bottom of the 9th on a Casey McGahee walkoff single. Carlos Marmol has now hit Weeks 3 times, including twice this year. Marmol hasn’t hit any other batter more than once, but he’s the only pitcher to plunk Weeks 3 times. That was also Weeks’ 27th plunk at Miller Park, which leaves him 5 short of Geoff Jenkins’ park record of 32.
