WBC Plunks - 3/7/09

In World Baseball Classic action yesterday, Shin-Soo Chu of Korea got hit by a pitch from the hand of Japan's Minoru Iwata, making Korea and the Cleveland Indians proud. Matt Stairs of Canada and the Phillies got hit by Jake Peavy of the US and the Padres, Bobby Abreau of Venezuela and the Angels got hit by Cody Cillo of Italy, and Randall Simon of the Netherlands got hit by Carlos Marmol of the Dominican Republic and the Cubs.

Obviously nobody wants their favorite players from their favorite Major League teams to get injured on an HBP in the World Baseball Classic, but on the other hand it has to be an honor to take a pitch for your country in an international competition, and if they can do it without getting injured it should serve as good practice for the upcoming season.

Another thing MLB fans and teams seem to worry a lot about is their pitchers getting worn out by throwing too much in the WBC. So, for your reference, I'll be keeping track of pitches thrown by MLB pitchers in WBC games. The chart is organized by Major League team so you can see if your team's pitchers are being overworked, or comfortably mowing down the international competition.

* - Rough outings are my unscientific count of outings with an average of more than 20 pitches per inning. The 2008 Major League average was about 16 pitches per inning, so if a pitcher averages 20 pitches per inning, he might be working a little too hard in that game.

That's nice work by Giambi. He's never had a 3 plunk game in the regular season, but his new teammate Nomar Garciaparra had a game in which he got plunked 3 times at the plate AND got hit by a batted ball while running the bases. But it looks like Giambi is planning to be among the American League leaders in plunks once again.

Giambi just moved way up on my fantasy draft list for the leauge that counts HBP. Because early spring training stats are a great predictor of regular season performance right? Right?

Early spring training stats are always a PERFECT predictor of regular season results. As far as I know.
But even if he hadn't had that 3 plunk game, Giambi would be a good choice to collect a lot of HBPs this season just based on his career history. He should get a few less now that he's not wearing the pinstripes and out of the AL East, but he still doesn't bother getting out of the way of pitches.

The real question hear is, why does your fantasy league bother with stats other than HBP?
