plunk streak update - forearm soreness edition

It looks like that last one hurt a little bit. Carlos Quentin has been kept out of the last two White Sox game due to soreness in his forearm, as a result of being hit by a pitch. That would have been the Josh Beckett pitch that made impact with Quentin's forearm at about 86mph (but was moving 94.7 mph out of Beckett's hand). If Quentin gets back in the game this afternoon, he'll probably be facing Kyle Davies. That's not great news for the streak, since Davies hasn't hit anyone this year. But hopefully we'll get an answer one way or another, whether the streak will be broken or extended, instead of another day off. Hopefully Quentin won't suddenly feel like getting out of the way of pitches due to this minor injury, or worries about his chances at the MVP award.

Yesterday the Astros - without Biggio - tied the record for most plunks in an inning, with three.

Just a note, though, about the Astros franchise plunk list: Ausmus is still active as of this year. Who knows, maybe he'll try to beat Biggio in plunks. After all, he was thrilled to pass Bagwell in career triples.

That was quite a flurry of plunks by the Astros... that was their first 3 plunk inning since 9/13/97 - during their 100 plunk season. They must be have suddenly realized that they're closing in on 2000 HBPs in franchise history, and maybe they all want the honor of being the 2000th batter plunked.

And good call on Ausmus, somehow I programmed that list so it bases "active" status on whether or not they've been hit this year. Part of me likes that criteria, but I guess I'll have to fix it. Brad Ausmus is sort of an important player to my various calculations, in that he might be a good predictor of how long a catcher can keep playing these days, which is an important ingredient when trying to predict whether or not Jason Kendall can catch Biggio or break the all time record.

Also, Biggio's jersey was retired yesterday, with a relevant comment by his son, Conor:

"He would do anything to help his team. Even if it was by accident -- like when he 'accidentally' moved his arm out, and 'accidentally' got hit by the pitch.'"

that was just his elbow diving in front of pitches that were headed right for his fragile wrists and hands! Like the secret service taking a bullet for the president.
